Changes in the New EE Category Base Content

The immigration website has been updated without any announcement.

This update pertains to the category-based selection of EE.

As of today (February 27), the page has been updated. It appears that this year's EE Category-Base selection will proceed with the following six categories:

  1. French-language proficiency – same as last year
  2. Healthcare and social services occupations – there are changes in the occupations.
  3. STEM – there are changes in the occupations.
  4. Trade occupations – appears to be the same as last year
  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations – appears to be the same as last year
  6. Education occupations – a new category this year, attracting much interest.

You can check this information at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/rounds-invitations/category-based-selection.html.

The Transport Category from last year is not included this year.

Additionally, there are some changes in the categories from last year:

Healthcare and social services occupations

The traditional Chinese medicine practitioner (acupuncturist) from last year has been excluded this year.

Instead, Pharmacy Assistants (NOC 33103), Pharmacy Technicians (NOC 32124), and Health Care Assistants (NOC 33102) are included.

These positions are worth considering if you have graduated from the relevant college and meet the EE qualifications.

STEM occupations

Most of IT-related jobs that were heavily included last year have been excluded. Instead, occupations related to civil engineering and electrical engineering are included.

Trade occupations

In addition to occupations like Cabinetmakers (NOC 72311) and Carpenters (NOC 72310), Cooks (NOC 63200) are also included.

Education occupations

This is a newly included category this year, and it is noteworthy that ECE (NOC 62202) is included.

These positions will be selected separately in the category-based selection, and therefore, it is highly likely that they will be selected with lower cut-off scores than the general EE cut-off scores. Hence, it is worth setting new goals.

Looking at the immigration trends of the past 1-2 years, it seems to create confusion and make people preparing for immigration feel lost. However, from a longer-term perspective, it can be seen that the occupations that have been consistently expressed as lacking in Canada are becoming easier to immigrate to in the long run, even if they become easier or harder within 1-2 years.

Therefore, rather than being confused by the difficulty this year or next year and changing direction to an easier area, it is better to set long-term goals and steadily build your career, as this will open the door to Canadian permanent residency.

Some people change their plans whenever immigration regulations are changed. There are also people who give up immediately because it was good last year but difficult this year.

However, those who consistently follow one path and approach the language requirements demanded by Canada more diligently eventually find a good path opening up.

Among those who inquire about category-based selection, some categories require 6 months of experience within the last 3 years. In this case, there are people who try to proceed with 6 months of experience without meeting the EE qualifications, but this is a wrong judgment.

The basis of category-based selection is EE. In other words, you must meet the EE qualifications.

Especially regarding work experience, for the FSW immigration program of EE, you must have at least 1 year of continuous full-time work experience in the priority occupation within the last 10 years.

For CEC, you must have at least 1 year of full-time work experience in Canada within the last 3 years.

For FST, you must have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in the relevant occupation within the last 5 years to qualify for EE.
